Philosophy and Ethics
This is a varied and interesting subject that covers many of the big questions about life. Pupils need tolerance and an open mind as they will be challenged to study other people’s points of view and develop a thorough understanding of different religious teachings. This is a Full Course at GCSE and employers, colleges and universities award it the same academic status as any other GCSE. All pupils will complete the full course.
What use is Philosophy and Ethics? It helps you to develop your thinking skills to a higher level and is a particularly useful qualification in our multicultural society. For example, it can be used for careers in Counselling, Journalism, Social Work, Teaching, Medicine, Law, the Police and Army to name but a few. As PLE examines life issues, the knowledge and skills that you gain can be applied to any subject area.
Enrichment
Pupils will receive a range of enrichment opportunities including holiday revision, after school sessions and a lunchtime Philosophy club. In addition we have celebration events to showcase work in years 7 and 8 as well as some workshops from companies such as education group who deliver workshops. (For example: Diwali).
TRIPS AND EVENTS
Pupils will be given opportunities to attend trips when it is felt there will be a significant advantage to their learning. In recent years the department has taken a lead on attending youth debates, youth parliament and Philosophy lectures (including those by renowned Philosopher Peter Vardy).
