Welcome to Fort Pitt Grammar School, where excellence underpins everything we believe in and do.

We are an innovative school with a very clear vision of what we want to achieve. Our ethos is founded on four “excellences”, starting with academic excellence. Without outstanding teaching and learning taking place – day in, day out – everything else a school might excel at will go to waste. However, we know that any great school is about so much more than what happens in the classroom, which explains our belief in community excellence. Being an outward-looking and modern institution, Fort Pitt embraces this engagement at school, local, national and global level.   Appearance excellence relates to the high standards maintained by students in terms of uniform, presentation and behaviour. Last but by no means least comes environment excellence.  To support the other three “excellences’, we believe a high quality learning environment, totally focussed on learning, raising aspirations, achievement and celebration is essential and promotes and supports the development of pride, self-respect and enjoyment.

Here at Fort Pitt, we place great emphasis on mutual support within the school community, believing that students flourish when they feel happy and secure. We treat each student as an individual. We care about her future, and work with her to develop not only her academic success but her self-belief and aspirations. Relationships throughout the school are based on respect, and focus firmly on the learning process.

We stand proudly in the grammar school tradition of academic success. However, our definition of that success is never fixed, just like the modern world around us. When today’s young people leave school to find their way in further education or the workplace, they need to do so having developed the skills and confidence to make a positive contribution to 21st century society. We trust that this confidence will come naturally to our students after they have spent their school careers working with our highly qualified and committed staff, or capitalising on some of the many leadership opportunities available, or involving themselves in our wide-ranging extension and enrichment programme, or participating in school productions, or taking part in House activities, many of which are organised by the students themselves.

Our school is situated in Chatham, at the top of Fort Pitt Hill, with commanding views over the River Medway. The school site used to house a fort, hence its name. It was a military hospital visited twice by Queen Victoria, and it was the first Army Medical School established by Florence Nightingale in 1860. Prior to being a school it was a hospital and recuperation facility for servicemen in the two World Wars. This rich heritage imparts a sense of dignity and purpose to our students, showing them the heights of what can be achieved with determination and desire. We believe that both our history and our future are reflected in the school buildings, a dynamic mixture of the traditional and the modern.

At our last Ofsted inspection, we were graded outstanding (to see the full report please click HERE).  We became an academy in November 2010 and since January 2012 have worked with two local schools as part of the Fort Pitt Grammar School Academy Trust. In recognition of our academic successes, we have been designated as a ‘Leading Edge’ school and a National Support School. Furthermore, demonstrating our commitment to community excellence, we have recently been nominated as a Champion School for the National Citizen Service programme – an acknowledgement that Fort Pitt students take responsibility beyond the school gates.

We are extremely proud of our students and alumni, who have achieved excellent examination results at all levels and are now realising their academic and personal ambitions. They are proof that Fort Pitt Grammar School is a passport to an excellent future.

If our website piques your interest, then please do come and take a closer look for yourself. We welcome visitors to the school and look forward to showing you everything Fort Pitt has to offer.
