Welcome to Fort Pitt Grammar School where excellence underpins all we do and believe in.
We are an innovative school and have a very clear vision of what we want to achieve; this we aim to do through our four “excellences”: academic excellence (through excellent teaching and learning), excellent community (involvement at all levels – school, local, global), excellent appearance (uniform and behaviour), excellent environment (school building and grounds). High standards are expected in every area and aspect of the school.
Our belief that students flourish and succeed when they feel happy and secure means that we place great emphasis on community and mutual support. We treat each student as an individual. We care about her future and work with her to develop not only her academic success, but her self-belief and aspirations. Relationships throughout the school are based on respect and focus firmly on the learning process.
As a grammar school our emphasis is on academic success; we want our students to be fully engaged in, and to enjoy, the learning process so that they are able to achieve their personal goals and develop the skills and confidence to make a positive contribution to 21st century society. That confidence can be gained by working with our highly qualified and committed staff, by taking up some of the many leadership opportunities available, by becoming involved in our wide-ranging extension and enrichment programme, by participating in school productions and by taking part in House activities, many of which are organised by the students themselves.
Our school is situated in Chatham at the top of Fort Pitt Hill with commanding views of the River Medway. The school site has housed a fort, hence its name; it was a military hospital visited twice by Queen Victoria and it was the first Army Medical School established by Florence Nightingale in 1860. Prior to being a school it was a hospital and recuperation facility for servicemen in the two World Wars. The school’s site and buildings are an interesting mix of traditional and modern and in many ways that reflects the nature of our school; we are keen to preserve and celebrate our traditions whilst ensuring that we are very firmly focused on the future.
At our last Ofsted inspection we were delighted to have been graded as outstanding. (to see the full report please click HERE). We became an academy in November 2010 and since January 2012 have worked with two local schools as part of the Fort Pitt Grammar School Academy Trust. In recognition of our academic successes we have been designated a ‘Leading Edge’ school and a National Support School. Recently, as a result of our students’ involvement within the local community, we have been nominated a Champion School for the National Citizen Service programme – an acknowledgement that Fort Pitt students look and take responsibility beyond the school gates.
We are extremely proud of our students, both past and present, who have achieved excellent examination results at all levels and are now realizing their academic and personal ambitions; they are proof that Fort Pitt Grammar School is a passport to an excellent future.
Words and photographs do not do our school community justice; our website provides only a flavour. We welcome visitors to the school and look forward to showing you everything Fort Pitt has to offer.
